Collection: Fossil Jasper
Mineral class- Tectosilicate (silica group)
Crystal system- Trigonal/cryptocrystalline (crystals are microscopic and packed tightly together rather then forming large visible faces)
Hardness- 6.5-7 on the MOHs scale
Rock formation- Sedimentary rock formations or silicates marine/ash deposits.
Groundwater rich in dissolved silica permeates buried organic structures such as ancient coral, shells (like crinoids or turritella) or bone.
The original organic material is slowly swapped out molecule by molecule with cryptocrystalline quartz, preserving the intricate biological patterns inside permanent stone matrix.
