Baryte (or barite) is a barium Sulfate mineral characterized by its high specific gravity.

Mineral class: Sulfate

Crystal system: Orthorhombic

Crystal habit: Frequently firms flat tabular crystals, bladed clusters, cockscomb aggregates or rosette shapes (like a desert rose)

Rock formation and geology:
Hydrothermal veins: Hot mineral rich liquids drop barium and Sulfate into cracks and faults in rocks, often alongside fluorite, calcite and quartz,

Sedimentary deposits: Precipitates out directly from marine waters or hot springs, forming beds, nodules or void-fillings in limestone, dolostone and shake.

Unusual weight: Despite being soft,non-metallic mineral,it has a very high specific gravity (approx 4:5)making it feel unusually heavy for its size.

Hardness: 3-3.5 on the MOHs scale.
