Black salt (Kala namak) is a condiment primarily composed of halite (salt drum chloride). It originates from sedimentary rock formations of evaporated ancient seas, though it is often processed under intense heat to develop its distinct characteristics.
Mineral class- Halides
Crystal system- Isometric (cubic)
Rock formation- Black salt begins as natural evaporite sedimentary rock salt (halite) mines from ancient underground deposits. These deposits formed millions of of years ago through the evaporation of ancient oceans.
While often colloquially marketed as a volcanic rock salt due to its dark colour and intense sulfurous eggy aroma, its final form is usually the result of a reductive thermal manufacturing process. Raw Himalayan pink or rock salt is sealed in kilns at extreme temperatures with charcoal and native botanicals (like harad seeds). These intense heat causes a chemical reaction that converts natural sulfates into pungent sulfides, resulting in the iconic dark violet whole crystals.
Hardness-2-2.5 on the MOHs scale
