Calymene is a highly famous genus of extinct marine arthropods (trilobites) that thrived from the Ordovician to the Silurian period (around 505 to 416 million years ago). They are among the most iconic and recognizable trilobites in the fossil record due to their distinct,heavy segmented exoskeletons and their tendency to be found beautifully enrolled into defensive balls.
Like all trilobites, their name comes from the three vertical lobes running down the body. One central axial lobe and two side pleural lobes. They typically feature 13 flexible thoracic segments that allow them to roll up like a modern woodlouse to protect their soft bellies from predators. They possess a distinct wide head shield (cephalon) featuring a deeply furrowed central region called glabella. They are relatively small trilobites generally averaging around 2-5cm
