Carnelian is s semi-precious brown-red to orange gem variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form quartz.
Mineral class- Silicates
Crystal system- Trigonal
Rock formation process- Carnelian forms at relatively low temperatures through the deposition of silica rich hydrothermal fluids or groundwater.
Primary hosts- typically found lining the cavities, fissures and gas bubbles of volcanic rocks such as basalts and within sedimentary rock layers.
As silica saturated fluids percolate through porous iron bearing host rocks, the silica precipitates and slowly consolidates into fine grained interlocking quartz fibers.
Over million of years these fluids harden into solid banded or massive chalcedony nodules.
