Chromite is the primary ore for chromium.
Crystal system-
Isometric (cubic). It commonly crystallizes in octahedrons though it is usually found as massive granular or compact aggregates.
Rock formation-
It forms in deep ultramafic igneous rocks like peridotite and finite. Because it is a heavy mineral that crystallizes early,it sinks to the bottom of cooling magma, creating large stratiform deposits or smaller pod like deposits. It also can be found in metamorphic rocks like serpentine.

Oxide mineral specifically a member of the spinel group. Its hardness is 5.5-6.5 on the MOHs scale
