Cobaltoan calcite often called cobaltocalcite is a vibrant pink variety of the common calcium carbonate mineral.
Mineral class: carbonate. It is a variety of calcite where a portion of the calcium ions is substituted by cobalt, and yielding the characteristic pink or purple-pink hue.
Crystal system: Hexagonal (trigonal) crystal system. It frequently display’s rhombohedral or scalenohedral crystal habits, often forming as sparking druzy crusts or rounded Botryoidal clusters over a matrix.
Rock formation: It typically precipitates at a relatively low temperatures in oxidizing environments where cobalt rich nickel zinc or copper bearing hydrothermal fluids percolate through host rocks. It is frequently found in mineral veins or as a secondary coating on matrix rocks like limonite or iron oxides.
Hardness: measures 3 on the MOHs scale.
