Dravite, commonly known as brown tourmaline,is a complex sodium-magnesium borosilicate mineral.
Crystal system: Trigonal. It typically forms elongate, prismatic crystals with heavy vertical striations.
Rock formation: Dravite is a magnesium rich mineral. Its formation is heavy dictated by the presence of both magnesium and boron rich fluids.
It forms most abundantly in contact metamorphic zones where boron fluids interact with magnesium rich rocks like dolomitic marbles,calcium-silicate skarns and serpentinites.
It also occurs as an accessory mineral in granites and pegmatites where hydrothermal or magnetic fluids introduce boron into the surrounding host rock.
Dravite belongs to the silicates mineral class, and measures 7 on the MOHs hardness scale.
