Emerald is a green gem variety of the mineral Beryl (beryllium aluminium silicate). Its deep green comes from amounts of trace amounts of chromium or vanadium.
Emerald belongs to the hexagonal crystals system and the mineral class is silicate. Its hardness is 7.5-8on the MOHs scale.
Emeralds are rare because the require two incompatible elements. Beryllium and chromium/vanadium which typically exist in very different host rocks,to mix together. They form in two primary geological environments.
Schist-hosted (magmatic related)
Hydrothermal fluids or pegmatites interact with iron poor silica deficient rock like talc carbonate or mica schists.
Hydrothermal (sedimentary)
Heated mineral bearing waters rise from deep igneous sources and crystallize within fractures in carbonate rich rocks or black shales.
