A Goniatite button is a polished fossil specimen made from an extinct marine cephalopod called Goniatite. These fossils are shaped and polished on the top surface into a rounded dome like button shape revealing the intricate internal chamber patterns and sutures inside the ancient shell.
Goniatite are ancient free swimming relatives of modern squids, octopuses and ammonites.
Most button fossils come from the Devonian period (around 350-400 million years old)
The surrounding rock is trimmed and smoothed into a circular or oval button profile, highlighting the white or calcite filled chamber lines against a darker stone matrix.
