Malachite and azurite are closely related copper carbonate minerals that often form together, typically in the oxidized zones of copper ore deposits. Both minerals are commonly found as secondary minerals in similar geological settings.
Both malachite and azurite belong to the carbonate mineral class.
Azurite is less stable then malachite and often weathers into malachite minerals ver time.(a process called pseudomorphosis).
Both minerals crystallize in the monoclinic Crystal system.
Malachite and azurite are both soft and range between 3.5-4 on the MOHs scale.
