Limonite and Marcasite differ fundamentally. Limonite is a mixture of hydrous iron oxides lacking a true Crystal system, whereas Marcasite is a distinct iron sulfide mineral with an orthorhombic crystal system.
Limonite:
Mineral class- Oxide/Hydroxide (mixture of minerals like goethite lepidocrocite and hematite)
Crystal system- Amorphous/earthy (no true distinct crystal structure)
Rock formation- forms as a secondary mineral via weathering or hydration of iron-rich precursors (magnetite hematite and pyrite ) or precipitates in bogs, soils and sedimentary environments.
Marcasite-
Mineral class- sulfide
Crystal system- Orthorhombic (often forming tabular, bipramidal or cockscomb twinned crystals.
Rock formation inside volcanic- commonly precipitates in low temperature, acidic sedimentary settings (such as shakes, limestone and chalk layers) and low temperature hydrothermal veins.
