Mordenite is a zeolite mineral that primarily forms as an alteration product in volcanic rocks like rhyolite, andesite and basalt.
Mordenite belongs to the silicate mineral class and is orthorhombic in the crystal system. It is a very soft mineral hardness is 3-5 on the MOHs scale.
Mordenite and is found predominantly as a cavity filling mineral in mafic volcanic rocks, and as an authentic mineral in sedimentary rocks. It also highly prevalent in marine sediments and altered volcanic gases.
Mordenite forms primarily through hydrothermal alteration where hot mineral rich fluids or rising temperatures alter pre-existing water unstable minerals like other zeolites under elevated pressures and sodium rich conditions.
