Otodus is an extinct genus of prehistoric mackerel sharks that ruled the global oceans from the paleocene to the Pliocene epochs, spanning roughly 65–3.6 million years ago. They were the undisputed apex predators of the cenozoic era, gradually evolving over millions of years to target massive marine mammals like whales.
The genus Otodus is most famous for containing megalodon the largest predatory fish in earths history.
The name Otodus stems from Ancient Greek for ear-shaped tooth. There teeth feature a wide triangular central crown flanked by two distinct side cusps resembling small “ears” or mini teeth.
It’s suggested that Otodus sharks were warm blooded. This internal heating allowed them to swim faster and hunt efficiently in colder waters.
