Dolomite is both an anhydrous calcium magnesium carbonate mineral and the sedimentary rock formed by it.

Crystal system: Trigonal-rhombohedral. It often displays curved saddle shaped crystal faces or rhombohedral habits
Rock formation: The massive sedimentary rock formed of dolomite is commonly called dolostone or dolomite rock.
Most dolomite is formed post-depositionally. Ancient limestones or calcuim carbonate lime muds are altered when they are exposed to groundwater rich in magnesium. This replacement process is called dolomitization.
Hardness: 3.5-4 on the MOHs scale
