Pink halite is a rare coloured variety of the mineral halite often called rock salt. It forms as a pink cubic or hopper shaped crystals. The colour is caused by trapped microorganisms (halophilic bacteria) and algae, or iron/potassium impurities.
The crystal system is isometric (cubic). Pink halite comes under the halides mineral class and has a hardness of 2-2.5 on the Metal ha scale.
Pink halite forms through the evaporation of highly saline water in arid, closed basin environments.
