Silicon carbide is a super hard synthetic ceramic primarily produced in electric arc furnaces using high purity silica Sand and petroleum coke. In nature it appears as the extremely rare mineral moissanite, which is found almost exclusively in meteorites and upper mantle igneous rocks.
Crystal system: there are over 200 different structural forms (polytypes). The most common ones are Hexagonal/rhombohedral and fave-centered cubic.
Mineral class is carbide and the hardness is 9.2-9.5 on the MOHs scale.
Rock formation: occurs naturally as moissanite. Industrial silicon carbide often known as carborundum is synthesized by melting quartz and carbon at extremely high temperatures.
