Strontianite is an uncommon strontium carbonate mineral.
Crystal system- Orthorhombic. Often forming needle like fibrous or columnar crystal groups.
Mineral class- Carbonate
Hardness- 3.5 on the MOHs scale
Rock formation- strontianite is primarily a low-temperature hydrothermal mineral that typically crystallises at around 100c-109c under hydrostatic pressure.
It is mostly commonly found within sedimentary rocks like limestone, chalk, marl and dolostone. It can also occur in igneous rock like carbonatites or inside altered basalt cavities.
Formation process- Mineral-rich,low temperature hydrothermal groundwater flows through fractures or openings in host rocks. As the water cools and settles, strontianite precipitates as a gangue (associated non metallic) mineral inside open cavities veins geodes and concretions.
