Tourmaline is a complex boron silicate mineral. It belongs to the silicate mineral class specifically the cyclosilicate subclass.
Crystal system is hexagonal (trigonal).
Tourmaline primarily forms in granitic pegmatites coarse grained igneous rocks, during the final stages of magma crystallization. It also commonly forms in metamorphic rocks like schist and marble often via boron metasomatism and can be found as detrital graining weathered sedimentary rocks.
Its hardness is 7-7.5 on the MOHs scale.
