Crystal system- Trigonal. Composed of ultra small fibrous quartz crystals packed tightly together rather than forming large visible distinct crystal faces.
Mineral class- Chalcedony (microcrystalline/cryptocrystalline quartz)
Inclusion minerals- Green branch like patterns (dendrites) are created by trace amounts of chlorite and hornblende alongside iron and magnesium.
Hardness- 6.5-7 on the MOHs scale
Rock formation:
Host environments- Mosstly forms within gas cavities (vugs or vesicles) in cooling volcanic, basaltic, or igneous lavas.
Process- Silica rich groundwater or hydrothermal fluids seep into the empty rock cavities over million of years.
Pattern development- Mineral-laden water or metallic oxides infiltrate time fissures in the hardening silica gel, creating the characteristic fern and tree like branching shapes before complete solidification.
