Pixie clogs is the folklore term for the unusual fossilised underground cocoons built by the Australian elephant weevil, leptopius duponti.
Despite looking like miniature, petrified shoes or traditional Dutch wooden clogs ,they are entirely biological structures constructed by insects thousands of years ago.
Origin- They are the prehistoric pupal casings of the Leptopius duponti weevil beetle.
Age- Most specimens originate from the Pleistocene to Holocene epochs, ranging from 10,00-to over 100,00 years old.
Location- They are predominantly found embedded in limestone cliffs and sandy deposits around Elliston and the Eyre peninsula south Australia.
Composition- The weevil larvae originally formed these protective cells using a mixture of soil, sand, and a natural oral secretion that hardened into a concrete like calcified shell to protect them during metamorphosis.
