Witherite is a barium carbonate mineral.
Crystal system- Orthorhombic. Crystals commonly twin into pseudo-hexagonal pyramidal or dipyramdal assemblages that look superficially hexagonal.
Habit- Short prismatic, globular, Botryoidal, columnar or granular masses.
mineral class- Carbonate. It is an anhydrous (water-free) mineral.
Rock formation- Witherite is a relatively rare barium carbonate mineral. It forms under specific geological conditions.
Hydrothermal veins- it primarily forms in low-temperature hydrothermal environments where barium-rich fluids react with carbonate-bearing rocks or solutions.
Sedimentary settings- it can also occur as secondary mineral in sedimentary ironstones or altered limestone beds.
Hardness-3-3.5 on the MOHs scale.
